SEAN RUBIN was born in Brooklyn, New York. As a city kid, he entertained himself by collecting interesting things, learning about unusual subjects, and by drawing characters from books, especially Redwall and The Lord of the Rings.
Bolivar, the first book Sean both wrote and illustrated, received three starred reviews and was nominated for an Eisner award, an ELG, and a Ringo award. Sean was nominated for the 2018 Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer, a comics industry honor, for his work on Bolivar.
Sean’s first comics story was a contribution to the Eisner-winning Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard anthology. He is also an illustrator for the New York Times Best-Selling Redwall Series; The Astronaut Who Painted The Moon (Scholastic, 2019); and The Passover Guest, (Neal Porter Books/Holiday House 2021), which won the 2022 Sydney Taylor Book Award. This Very Tree (Holt, 2021) was his first self-authored picture book.
Sean studied art and archeology at Princeton University, where he met his wife, Lucy. They have two sons and currently live in Charlottesville, Virginia, where they enjoy hiking, visiting museums, and drinking chocolate egg creams.
